He refits their spaceship, giving them some special fuel he invented to power it, and tells them to fly to the mushroom planet (after getting their parents' permission). Using his marvelous stroboscopic polarizing filter he shows the boys a previously undetected satellite of the Earth, which he calls Basidium-X. When two boys find an ad in a newspaper asking for two young boys to build a spaceship, they quickly construct one out of old tin and scrap wood (including the hull of a derelict rowboat), and bring it to the advertiser. The Wonderful Flight was published under the Atlantic Monthly Press imprint of Little, Brown in September 1954, and it received a starred review from Kirkus Reviews. The 'Mushroom Planet', visited by the protagonists David Topman and Chuck Masterson, is covered in various types of mushrooms and is populated by little green people who are in a state of distress.

It is set in Pacific Grove, California, and on Basidium, a tiny habitable moon of Earth, invisible from the planet in its orbit 50,000 miles away. This book is first in a series starring these two boys.The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet is a children's science fiction novel written by Eleanor Cameron, illustrated by Robert Henneberger, and published by Little, Brown in 1954. I liked the character of Ta who acted imperious, but we quickly find out has a soft heart. The setting of the 'Mushroom Planet' was pretty funny. I think if I read this at age 10 I would have probably said cute story and went back to my Nancy Drew books. Since this book was not written for me, I thought it was perfect for someone between the ages of 6-9. As an adult your first impulse is to scoff at two kids being able to build a spaceship and hurtle into space and walk out onto a planet with no oxygen about. With books like these, I often think they are easier to read as a child. Bass and hear about the mysterious planet that he wants them to take off and explore, the story picks up. The two boys take up items that they find and build a spaceship and go off to meet the man who put the ad in the paper, Mr. The book follows two friends, Chuck and David who respond to an ad that requests that a boy or boys build a spaceship. This was a really cute and quick read so I am glad that I finally read it yesterday. I read this as part of Dead Writers Society genre challenge for March.
